020-C Easy Large Sunflower

  • This design works best crocheted a bit tighter – try to size properly to yarn thickness and use right hook size.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Tr 2 tog: triple 2 together (*yo twice, insert hook in stitch, pull up a loop, yo pull thru 2 loops, yo, pull thru 2 loops*: 2 loops on hook, repeat from * to * 1 more time. Yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Pic3: 3 chain picot. chain 3, sl st into 1st ch

Qd 2 tog: quadruple crochet 2 together. I’m calling this a quadruple as it is one loop taller than a triple)

(*yo 3 times, insert hook in stitch, pull up a loop - yo pull thru 2 loops - yo, pull thru 2 loops - yo, pull thru 2 loops*: 2 loops on hook, repeat from * to * 1 more time. Yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

START

Ch 3 and join into loop with sl st.

ROW 1

NOTE: You'll be working the center in a spiral so do NOT join after each row. Instead, mark the first stitch of each row with a stitch marker, and move it up as you go.

Into ring, work 6 sc and do not join.

ROW 2

Place marker. Work 2 sc into each st around (12 sc).

ROW 3

*1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around (18 sc)

ROW 4

*1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around (24 sc)

ROW 5

*1 sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around (30 sc)

You will now be making 2 rows of chain spaces to work the petals into. One row is behind the first, but both are worked into the stitches on row 5. You won’t need the stitch marker anymore.

ROW 6

Ch 3, *sk 1 st, sl st into next st, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in the last sc of row 5 - 15 ch 3 spcs.

You will now work BEHIND row 6, working into the stitches of row 5 that you skipped when doing row 6.

ROW 7

Sl st into first skipped st from row 5. Ch 5, *sl st into the next skipped st (always working behind row 6), ch 5. Repeat from * around. Sl st in starting sl st. -(15 ch 5 spcs)

Cut off yarn and start ne wcolor

ROW 8 (FRONT ROW OF PETALS)

NOTE: You'll be working a front and back row of petals - using the front loops and then the back loops. Make sure to work into loops as indicated.

Join NEW COLOR in any ch 3 sp (this is the front row of spaces). (Ch 3, tr 2 tog, pic3, ch 4, sl st) all in the same ch 3 sp. *(sl st in next ch 3 sp, ch 3, tr 2 tog, picot, ch 4, sl st, all in same sp). Repeat from * in each sp around.

Be sure to notice you start each petal with 3 ch and end with 4 ch, this centers the point better.

Join with a sl st to starting join. (15 petals)

ROW 9 (BACK ROW OF PETALS)

You will now work into the back row of chain 5 spaces.

Sl st in the nearest ch 5 sp of the back row. (Ch 4, qd 2 tog, pic3, ch 5, sl st) all in the same ch 5 sp. *(sl st in next ch 5 sp, ch 4, qd 2 tog, pic3, ch 5, sl st in same sp). Repeat from * in each sp around. Join with a sl st to first sl st. (15 petals)

Fasten off.
