TIPS

Tips: List

BASIC STITCHES

If you need help/guidance with pattern abbreviations or stitches:

  • We suggest you go to YouTube and find a video that will explain/demonstrate.

COLOR AND TEXTURE

  • Remember your item will be seen at a distance so use colors that will stand out -- bright and contrasting colors.

  • Novelty or textured yarn can be used for accents - particularly around the edges.

  • Most of our patterns do NOT indicate color changes. You can use the photos as a color guideline, or just use any colors you want.

ADJUSTING SIZE

Many patterns will make flowers that are a bit too small for our project.

  • Use 2 strands or thicker yarn to enlarge, and use a larger crochet hook that fits your thicker yarn.

  • If your flower is too small, look at other patterns for ideas to add an edging or make extra outer rows.

EXPERIMENT!

Once you've made a few patterns, you'll understand the basic elements and can start to mix/match.

  • Pick elements from various patterns that you like best, and try to make a new pattern with these elements.

  • Use different outer rows and edgings to vary your patterns.

MAKE STARTING CIRCLE (CROCHET)

Many patterns call for starting with 'magic ring' (go to YouTube for instructions).  But you may have problem with it coming open. Instead, here's an easy alternative that avoids this problem:

  • Ch 3, then in 1st chain make starting stitches as stated in your pattern.

  • This 1st chain will serve as your 'ring' to make your starting stitches.

  • If your starting stitches are long (like dc or trc), chain 1-2 stitches more.

  • When done, just pull on your starting string to close up the hole.
