This makes small butterfly - to make bigger, use bulky or multi-strands of yarn and bigger crochet hook
You can use different color yarn - Row 1 and 2 in same color; Row 3 in different color
Pattern posted on www.niftynnifer.com website - instructions below have slight modifications

Instructions seem a bit complicated but it's actually fairly easy. Just follow instructions carefully (especially in Row 3).
START
Chain 5; join into ring.
ROW 1 (FOUNDATION CHAINS)
You're going to make chain loops that form the wings -2 large and 2 small.
NOTE: Try not to twist your chains in this step.
Ch 16, join with sl st in ring. (lefthand large wing)
Ch 8, join with sl st in ring (lefthand small wing)
Ch 8, join with sl st in ring (righthand small wing)
Ch 16, join with sl st in ring (righthand large wing)
ROW 2
LEFTHAND LARGE WING: Work 14 dc in the 16 ch space. As you make these dcs, you may need to scoot them down a bit on the chain.
Hold your work with the loop positioned to the right - you're on the 14th dc but find the space inbetween the 5-6th dc. Make 1 dc in this space (this makes a connecting stitch across the wing that pulls the wing a bit together).
Now go back up to where you made the 14th dc and make an additional 5 dcs into the chain loop. Slip stitch into the ring.
This will fill the wing with dc stitches but you have that one dc that connects the wing together.
NOTE: If this is too confusing, just skip this cross-dc and make 19 dcs in the loop.
LEFTHAND SMALL WING: Work 10 dc into the 8-ch loop. Slip stitch into the ring.
RIGHTHAND SMALL WING: Work same as lefthand small wing
RIGHTHAND LARGE WING: Work same as lefthand large wing
ROW 3 - follow these stitch instructions carefully - if you're off a stitch or two, just adjust
LEFTHAND LARGE WING:
Slip stitch into the next 3 sts. 1 hdc in next 2 stitches, (dc, ch2, dc) all in next stitch. 2 dc in next st, ch 3, slip st in top of last dc made, 2 dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in next st, sc in next 4 sts, slip st in next 5 sts (or to end). Slip st in st at bottom of wing (to join) and tighten stitch.
LEFTHAND SMALL WING:
Slip stitch into the next 4 sts. Ch 9, slip st in 6th ch from hook. slip st in last 3 chs. Slip st in next dc, slip st in last 4 sts (or to end). Slip st in st at bottom of wing (to join) and tighten stitch.
RIGHTHAND SMALL WING: Work same as lefthand
RIGHTHAND LARGE WING (this is a backward version of the lefthand wing)
Slip stitch into the next 5 sts. Sc in next 4 sts, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 3, slip st in top of last dc made, 2 dc in same st as last dcs made, (dc, ch 2, dc) all in next st. Hdc in next 2 sts. Slip st to end. Slip st in st at bottom of wing (to join) and tighten stitch.
Fasten off.
FINISHING
Weave in any loose threads.
You may want to make some sort of body, head, antennae to make it look more like a butterfly.
