  • Easy to adjust to make smaller or larger

  • You can use same or different colors for upper and lower wings; make edgings and body/head a contrasting color

  • Make 2 upper wings, 2 lower wings, body, head and antennae; then sew pieces together

  • Adjust size by increasing or decreasing number of stitches in starting Row 1.

UPPER WINGS (make 2)

START

Chain 20; do not join.

ROW 1 (MAIN PART OF WING)

Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Work 1 hdc, 1 dc and 1 tr in next 3 chs. In next 11 ch, work 1 dtr. Then work 1 tr, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 sc to end. Break off yarn.

This is the main part of your wing. You'll now work rows of edging around this piece.

ROW 2 (1st EDGING ROW)

Position the piece so you're working on the right side and with the Row 1 stitches at the top. You'll be working first in the Row 1 stitches and then down the other side of the chain stitches.

Join new yarn in 1st sc. In same st, work 3 sc. Then work 1 sc in each stitch across. In last sc, make 3 sc. Now work on the other wide down the chain. Make 1 sc in each ch across to end.

NOTE: Don't make your sc stitches too tight, you want your wing to lay nice and flat.

Join with sl st to 1st sc.

ROW 3 (2nd FRILLY EDGING)

Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 5, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, dc in first sc.

ROW 4 (3rd FRILLY EDGING)

*Ch 5, sc in 3rd ch from hook (picot made), ch 2, sc in next ch-5 loop**. Repeat from * to ** around. Join and break off.

LOWER WINGS (make 2)

START

If desired, use different color than upper wings.

Chain 11; do not join.

ROW 1 (MAIN PART OF WING)

Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Work 1 hdc, 1 dc in next 2 chs. In next 4 ch, work 1 tr. Then work 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 sc to end.

Join with sl st to 1st sc.

ROW 3 (2nd FRILLY EDGING)

Sc in same place as sl st, ch 2, picot, ch 2, sc in same sc (tip of wing), * ch 2, picot, ch 2, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

BODY & HEAD

  • You'll be making a flat piece that you'll sew over the area where the wings are joined.

  • Use contrasting color for body & head, and another color for edging.

  • Try to create/maintain pointed tip for end of body and round shape for head. Adjust stitches if needed to get these shapes.

START: Ch 13.

ROW 1 (BODY): Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Work 1 hdc, 1 dc in next 2 chs. In next 6 ch, work 1 tr. Then work 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 sc to end. Break off yarn.

ROW 2 (BODY): Work same as for lower wing. Join new yarn in 1st sc. In same st, work 3 sc. Then work 1 sc in each stitch across. In last sc, make 3 sc. Now work on the other side down the chain. Make 1 sc in each ch across to end. Join with sl st to 1st sc.

ROW 3 (HEAD): Sl st into stitch at the tip of the body. Ch 7.

ROW 4 (HEAD): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, half dc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next ch.

ROW 5 (HEAD): Going back around head, 1 sc in each remaining st around but at top of head make 2 sc in same sc. Sl st into base on neck and break off.

EDGING AROUND BODY & HEAD:

Attach new color starting at end tip. Sl st in back loop of each sc on body, around head and back down body to tip. Make a few extra stitches at tip to make it pointy. Join and break off.

NOTE: It's OK if these stitches pull in a bit, as it will make the body a bit curved around and 3-dimensional.

ANTENNAE: Ch 20 and break off. Make knots on both ends to form small knobs. Set aside.

NOTE: You may want to use a pipe-cleaner instead of yarn for antennae as they will be stiffer and you can shape better.

FINISHING

With yarn on a needle, sew upper wings together, then lower wings (set them a bit farther apart). Then lay body over middle and sew to attach. At tip of head, sew antennae.
