095-C Intermediate Frilly Butterfly

  • Pattern for medium and large size butterfly; if making large size, use thinner yarn




For medium size -- make two 'C' for upper wings and two 'D' for lower wings

For large size -- make two 'B' for upper wings and two 'C' for lower wings


'B' WING (largest)

START

Chain 13; do not join.


You'll be working up one side of the chain, around the tip and then down the other side of the chain.

ROW 1

Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each of next 7 ch, h dc in next ch, in next ch make sc, ch 3 and sc; now work­ing along opposite side of founda­tion ch, work h dc in next ch, dc in 9 remaining ch across. Ch 3, turn.

ROW 2

Dc in each st up to ch-3 loop at tip. In loop make 3 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc. Then dc in each st down the row and in top st of turning ch. Ch 1, turn.

ROW 3

Sc in each st. At tip, make 2 sc, ch 3 and 2 sc in sp at tip. Continue making sc down row. Ch 4, turn.

ROW 4

** Skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 1**. Repeat from * down to tip. In loop at tip, make dc, ch 1, dc, ch 3, dc, ch 1 and dc. Continue * to ** down other side. Ch 1, turn.

ROW 5

*2 sc in each ch1 space** up row. At tip, make 2 sc, ch 3 and 2 sc. Continue * to ** down other side. Ch 5, turn.

ROW 6

* Skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 2**. Repeat * to ** up row. At tip, make dc, ch 2, dc, ch 3, dc, ch 2 and dc. Continue * to ** down other side. Ch 1, turn.

ROW 7

*In each ch2 space, make 3 sc and a picot (ch 3, slip into 1st c to make loop)** down to tip and around other side. In last space, make 3 sc only. Fasten off.

'C' WING (middle size)

START

Chain 13; do not join.


You'll be working up one side of the chain, around the tip and then down the other side of the chain.

ROW 1

Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each of next 7 ch, h dc in next ch, in next ch make sc, ch 3 and sc; now work­ing along opposite side of founda­tion ch, work h dc in next ch, dc in 9 remaining ch across. Ch 3, turn.

ROW 2

Dc in each st up to ch-3 loop at tip. In loop make 3 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc. Then dc in each st down the row and in top st of turning ch. Ch 1, turn.

ROW 3

Sc in each st. At tip, make 2 sc, ch 3 and 2 sc in sp at tip. Continue making sc down row. Ch 4, turn.

ROW 4

* Skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 2**. Repeat * to ** up row. At tip, make dc, ch 2, dc, ch 3, dc, ch 2 and dc. Continue * to ** down other side. Ch 1, turn.

ROW 5

*In each ch2 space, make 3 sc and a picot (ch 3, slip into 1st c to make loop)** down to tip and around other side. In last space, make 3 sc only. Fasten off.

'D' WING (small size)

START

Chain 13; do not join.


You'll be working up one side of the chain, around the tip and then down the other side of the chain.

ROW 1

Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each of next 7 ch, h dc in next ch, in next ch make sc, ch 3 and sc; now work­ing along opposite side of founda­tion ch, work h dc in next ch, dc in 9 remaining ch across. Ch 3, turn.

ROW 2

** Skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 1**. Repeat from * down to tip. In loop at tip, make dc, ch 2, dc, ch 3, dc, ch 2 and dc. Continue * to ** down other side. Ch 1, turn.

ROW 3

*In each ch2 space, make 3 sc and a picot (ch 3, slip into 1st c to make loop)** down to tip and around other side. In last space, make 3 sc only. Fasten off.


BODY (you'll be making an angled flat piece that when stretched will form a somewhat tubular body that's pointed at both ends)


START: For Medium: Ch 7; For Large: Ch 9

ROW 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and sc in each stitch to end. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter pick up back loop only of each sc.

ROW 2: 2 sc in 1st sc, sc in each stitch till last 2. Work last 2 as 1 (put hook through 2 and work 1 sc). Ch 1, turn.

ROW 3: Work off 1st 2 sc as 1, sc to last st, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.


Repeat Rows 2 and 3 alternately until piece measures: 2 inches for medium; 2-1/2 inches for large (or however long you want your body to be). Fasten off.


ANTENNAE

Medium: Ch 40

Large: Ch 45

Work sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each stitch of chain. Fasten off.


FINISHING

With yarn on a needle, gather the straight ends of wings tightly. Place the gathered end of one larger wing over the gathered end of smaller wing as in photo and sew in place. Sew two remaining wings together in same way. Sew the gathered edges of the 2 pairs of wings together at center.


Sew the two long ends of body together, stuffing with several strands of thread and making sure to keep one end of body pointed. Sew body in place over the joined wings, having the pointed end of body even with bot­tom edge of smaller wings.


Roll and sew the ends of antennae to form small knobs. Double this piece and sew in place under upper part of body.
