6 or 8 petal option for this basic flower pattern - they differ slightly to allow for difference in size.
You can vary up the stitches to create the petals - pattern gives one style of petals but you can substitute other stitches from other patterns - they just need to fit nicely into the loop.
Great for mixing/matching/experimenting with color combinations

Pattern below is a slight modification of original pattern (12 petal version is not recommended)

NOTES:
Color changes are not indicated in pattern but you can use different color for each row.
Check your stitch count on first few rows to make sure you have right number. You can fudge a bit to correct.
You can fairly easily incorporate your loose threads (when you change colors) and cover with your next row of stitches -- this will minimize the number of threads you have to sew in when done.
START
Use a slightly different method to create starting ring -- it makes a more substantial and heavier center which works well in this pattern. You may want to use this thicker ring in other patterns as well.
Wrap your starting yarn loosely around your index finger around about 8 times. Slip off your finger trying to keep the center open, put your hook through and pull through yarn to start working stitches. This ring will have a fairly large hole in the center- do NOT pull tight.
ROW 1 (CENTER)
6 PETAL: Work 24 dcs into ring. Join.
8 PETAL: Work 16 dcs into ring. Join.
COUNT STITCHES to make sure you have right number.
ROW 2
6 or 8 PETAL: Work 1 sc into each stitch. Make these VERY LOOSE so they don't curl up the edge.
ROW 3 (BASE FOR PETALS)
6 PETAL: Make 1dc in each of first 4 sts, ch4. Repeat 5 more times. Slip st. to join.
8 PETAL: Make 2dc in each of first two sts, ch4. Repeat 7 more times. Slip st to join.
NOTE: Check to make sure you've done these stitches correctly -- it's easy to make a mistake here.
ROW 4 (PETALS)
6 PETAL: Into each ch4 loop, work 9 dc into loop. Into the 4 dcs between the loops, work 1sc between the 4 dc loops (just to secure/stabilize the petals). Continue working into the loops and making 1 sc inbetween. Join.
8 PETAL: Into each ch4 loop, work 8 dc into loop. Into the 4 dcs between the loops, work 1sc between the 4 dc loops (just to secure/stabilize the petals). Continue working into the loops and making 1 sc inbetween. Join.
NOTE: You can adjust the number of dcs into the petals if they look too skimpy or too full. Just work the number of stitches that make your petals look good.
Finish off.
