Updated: Jul 5, 2022

  • You can make any type of center you want for this flower, but you should end up with round shape that is multiple of 10 stitches (to make the outer petal design work).

  • Directions are for center as shown in photo.

Color changes are not indicated in pattern below.

SPECIAL STITCH

Puff stitch: Wrap yarn over the hook and insert into stitch. Yarn over again and draw up a loop (3 sts on hook. Yarn over, insert your hook through the same stitch, yarn over, and then draw up another loop (5 sts on hook). Repeat previous step until you have specified number of loops on hook. When you have right number of loops, yarn over and draw through all the loops on the hook. You may need to wiggle the hook a bit to get through the loops but try to keep the loops neat.

Double treble stitch (dtr): Work treble st but leave 2 sts on hook; then yo 2 to work another treble in same stitch, then pull through 2 sts at a time until you have 3 on hook. Yo and pull through the 3 loops.

START

Ch 3, do NOT join in ring.

ROW 1 (BASE)

In 1st ch (serves as ring), work 10 dc. Join with slst in top of 1st dc. Pull on starting tail to close circle. (10 dc)

ROW 2 (PUFF STITCH)

Elongate loop to puff st height, *make puff stitch of 9 loops (see above) and ch2 into each st from previous row. Repeat * to ** to make total of 10 puffs and 10 ch spaces. Join.

NOTE: If your yarn is thin, you can adjust the number of loops so it looks nice and puffy and fills in space.

NOTE: This center may better on the flip side, you’ll see the puffs stand out more - so use whatever side looks best to you to continue.

ROW 3 (OPENWORK PETALS)

In first ch space, Ch 4, then work 1 tr in same space. Ch 2. In stitch at top of puff, work a double treble (see above). Then ch 2.

Continue working double treble + ch2 in each ch space and in each stitch at top of puff. (20 double treble stitches + ch 2s). Join.

ROW 4

Work a sc in each stitch around. Try to keep stitches a bit loose so you don’t start to curve the circle up.

Check your stitch count to make sure you have a multiple of 10 stitches (you can fudge a bit here to make your stitch count work).

ROW 5 (PETALS)

In one of the sc stitches, work 1 tr, 2 stitch picot (ch 2, put hook into stitches at bottom of ch2 and slip st through to make a little loop). In the same stitch make 5 more sets of 1 tr + 2 st picot for total of 6 trs. Now make another tr without a picot. This will make your petal.

Skip next sc, in next sc make 1 sc. Skip next sc and make your petal cluster. Continue around.

CHECK how your petals are curving around – they should be lying fairly flat on your flower. If they are not full enough or are too full, you can adjust the number of treble stitches.

Join. Fasten off.
